Non-Shunting Procedures for Management of Esophageal Varices

Abstract

|
Non-shunting operations were performed on eighteen patients with esophageal varices from June 1978 to June 1983 in department of surgery, Kwang-Ju Christian Hospital.
The procedures included 12 esophageal transection with paraesophagogastric devascularization (Sugiura), 2 terminal esophago proximal gastrectomy (TEPG), and 4 transabdominal esophageal transection using EEA stapler (Peracchia).
The age of the patients ranged from 31 years to 57 years. Of the 18 cases 17 were male. Two of the patients were Child¢¥s class A, 10 were Child¢¥s class B and 6 were Child¢¥s class C. In all of the patients, portal hypertension was secondary to liver cirrhosis.
Three patients were performed the emergency operations, 14 were .Performed elective operations, and one was prophylactic operation. There was one hospital death(5.6%), who received Sugiura¢¥s procedure.
The incidence of post-operative complications were 38.9%, which included 3 wound infections, 3 esophageal strictures, 2 ascites, 2 pleural effusion, 2 reflux esophagitis, 1 suture line leakage, and 1 hepatic failure.
The rate of disappearence of the esophageal varices were 78.5%.
The post-operative re-bleeding of the esophageal varices were not occurred.
